Murrayfield DAFS 3 beat Holy Cross 2 by 6 wickets
The 3s started off their season with a curtain-raiser against last season’s Division 6 winners Holy Cross 2nds.
A tough game was in prospect but hopes were raised by the presence of a host of new recruits and returning veterans of the Murrayfield 3rd team.
James lost the toss and Holy Cross elected to bat first, perhaps hoping to apply some pressure to an untested MDAFS batting line-up.
Murrayfield got off to a flying start, Chris opening up with a maiden and James striking twice in the second over to leave Cross 1-2 after 2 overs.
Opposition skipper Gaware struck an excellent counterattacking 21, including one enormous 6 over cow corner, before falling LBW to a canny piece of bowling from Chris.
Debutants Farhad and Jonathan were the change bowlers and they combined to devastating effect with the next 6 wickets falling for the addition of only 24 runs. Holy Cross finishing on 60, a well below par total on a slow outfield but none-too-treacherous deck.
Farhad particularly impressed with debut figures of 4.5-1-11-4 but Jonathan’s 2 for 11 in 3 overs was nothing to be sniffed at either.
After a customarily excellent tea, 3s openers Ram and Dave – on return to the club after a 20+ year hiatus – took guard.
Ram was undone by an excellent swinging yorker and departed for just 1. However, Dave and former 3s skipper Ali dug in to add 31 for the second wicket before Ali was bowled by a well-disguised slower ball.
This brought Chris to the crease and he and Dave used their substantial combined experience to add 13 runs before Dave fell for a crucial 11.
Farhad was next man in and wasted no time in showing his big-hitting prowess, finishing up on a rapid 14*. Chris fell for 6 trying to finish proceedings in quick time and Jonathan joined Farhad at the crease to see the 3s over the line.
An excellent opening day victory against opposition who played the game in their usual excellent spirit. Some phenomenal debut performances and crucial contributions from across the team, though the undoubted Man of the Match was Farhad with 4 for 11 and a quickfire 14*.
