Kwik Cricket Festivals
Great news as MDAFS emerge unbeaten and are outright winners of the West Lothian Kwik Cricket festival held on 20 June - a good all round performance with Lewis Mulholland the standout performer.
MDAFS fielded a U-10 team in the Sunday 23rd Penicuik and then Sunday 30th May Grange Kwik Cricket festival. We lost all 4 games at Penicuik and at Grange lost 3 won 1; highlights were running Watsons close (a loss by 2 runs) and victory over SMRH in our last match by a convincing 42 runs with a loan of a player from SMRH who took great pleasure from beating his team-mates!!
MDAFS v Watsonians U-13 at Roseburn Park
Our Juniors action on Monday 31 May saw another close game for our U-13s against Watsonians who were pushed to the end of the 19th over before passing their 84 run target with the loss of 5 wickets. Earlier Finlay Ross continued his good form with the bat with 31 retired not out. Fin also took a wicket first ball of the Watsons reply and Vignesh Venkatesh took 2 wkts for 12 runs.
MDAFS v Edinburgh U-13 at Leith Academy
The match against Edinburgh CC was washed out after 7.3 overs (ECC U-13 on 52-3 with Ross Kneebone taking 2 wickets and Finlay Ross 1 wicket. The game will be replayed probably on Mon 5 July.
MDAFS v Carlton B U-13 at Roseburn Park
Another close game as we ran Carlton U-13 B close. MDAFS scored 45 but kept Carlton pegged back with the Carlton lads only reaching their target in the 19th over - an over that when completed saw Finlay take another 2 wickets after Carlton had reached their 46 run target to add to his previous one. Wickets also for Ross Kneebone (a sharp caught and bowled) and Andrew Towns. Also a direct hit run out by Louis Robinson.
MDAFS v Grange B U-13 at Roseburn Park
A much improved performance and an excellent contest against Grange B. Grange scoring 77 off 20 overs - bowling highlight was 3 wickets in Finlay's final over and a great catch by Ben. MDAFS Juniors in reply came within 4 runs of victory with Fin capping off a fine all-round display, having earlier retired on 31, returning for the last 2 balls of the match but not quite able to get us to the win.
MDAFS v SMRH U-13 at Inverleith
The next Monday U-13 Juniors match saw MDAFS take on SMRH U-13s at a very chilly Inverleith. SMRH scored 95 for 4 from their 20 overs with D Sharkey 23 (retired) and E Campbell 21 (retired). Abhilhash Bharadwaj took 2 wkts for 5 runs for MDAFS. Unfortunantly we batted poorly finishing on 40 for 10 with Mr Extras finishing top scorer, but a creditable 6 for Antony and a not out 4 for Charlie, up top Ross F showed promising technique in his stay at the crease. A defeat by 55 runs - J Pennell 2-2; J MacDonald 2-3; E Campbell 2-1 top bowlers for SMRH. Bowling and fielding generally good for MDAFS but some more patience and application needed with the bat.
MDAFS v Edinburgh Academicals U-13 at Roseburn Park
The first Monday U-13 Juniors match saw MDAFS play Edinburgh Accies at Roseburn. MDAFS scored 50 from their 18 overs with Finlay Ross top scorer with 16. A strong Accies opening partnership saw them to their victory target but Ross Coats claims a wicket as the allotted overs are bowled out.
Youth Practice at Roseburn Park
Outdoor Practice starts up again on Friday 30th April at Roseburn Park from 6pm till around 8pm and then every Friday till the end of August. Coaching sessions will be a mix of hardball and softball depending on age and experience. Beginners welcome.

Three New Coaches Pass UKCC Level 1
Three MDAFS players and parents recently took the UKCC Level 1 Cricket Coaching course and we are delighted to say all three passed. So congratulations and well done to Jean-Pierre Cruz Rocha, Dougie Adamson, and Patrick McCarthy.
U-13s Sign off with a Thrilling Tie
Our U-13s final indoor tournament game saw them pitched against Heriots. Again another great performance with the ball and in the field saw Heriots restricted to just 246. We started cautiously, determined not to lose wickets (and lose 5 runs for each) but after a tumble of wickets in the middle overs attempting to accelerate it was again up to our final batting pair, Ross and Fin, to pull one out of the hat as 40 odd was needed off the last 3 overs. It came down to 5 off the last ball to tie - 6 to win, the final ball was bowled well to prevent the six but with great prescence of mind, the lads keep running and pressurise the Heriots fielders into going for run-outs and somehow they scramble 3 runs to add to the 2 for the wall-hit and so a dramatic tie as a result! Our U-11s have their final match on Sunday v Fauldhouse at 1.15.
Junior Cricket Update
Our Juniors have continued to be in action at U-13 and U-11 Level in the LJCDG Indoor Tournament. On Sunday 21st the U-13s were involved in great game against Penicuik. The lads had what was arguably their best performance to date with excellent bowling and fielding to restrict Penicuik to 258. In reply we lost a flurry of wickets early doors to make the target tougher (loss of 5 runs per wicket) but with 18 neeeded of the last over the lads so nearly got there, but a vital loss of a wicket 2nd last ball meant that Penicuik just shaded it by 4 runs. Generally there has been very satisfactory progress as the lads go up the learning curve which bodes well for the future.
Junior Section in Indoor Action
MDAFS Juniors kicked off the 2010 season with an indoor U-11 LJCDG match against Watsonians. Unfortunantly Sonians were firing on all cyclinders and our lads were understandably a bit rusty as we lost too many wickets in our reply. Still, a good experience for the lads. Next up will a tough challenge for our U-13s in a match at 2.15 at West Woods v a team from Loretto.
Junior Section Indoor Nets
Our spring Junior Nets are being held at Academy Sports Centre (Edin Academy Junior School, Arboretum Rd) as follows:
Sat 20 Feb12-2pm for each. £3 members and £6 non-members.
We found that 1 hr sessions were a bit too rushed for previous indoor nets - but the Centre wouldn't do 90 mins hires. So we have 2 hr sessions which should provide plenty of opportunity for skills work/drills.
LJCDG Indoor 8-a-side Tournament
We have entered the 2010 Lothian Junior Cricket Development Group Indoor 8-a-side Tournamentat both Under-13 and U-11 level this year.
Games are as follows - all at Westwoods, Fettes:
Sun 17 January - 1415 - U11 Watsonians v M-DAFSCommunity Cricket Coach Appointed
MDAFS are delighted to announce that we will have the services of a new Edinburgh Council backed Community Cricket Coach for the next two years. The post is being funded by CEC, the CSDT and by us and Corstorphine CC. We were part of the interview panel which met recently and appointed Antony McKenna (a young and enthusiastic Level 2 coach). Antony will be of great help to us in progressing our Junior section further forward. Talking of coaching we still have funds available for anyone wishing to take a formal coaching course - let me (Ian Shiels) know on 07730 074174.
The Club generates nearly all of it’s income from membership subscriptions and match/practice fees. Running a cricket club is - as you can imagine - not cheap and the Club needs to carefully ensures that it can balance its books and make provision for future major capital purchases. We will investing much in the facilities, playing surfaces and developing the storage building at Roseburn Park into a proper cricket pavillion.
The 2010 Youth Membership rate is just £15 - compared to £80 for
full Adult member. For further details on benefits and a Membership Form please
see Membership below.
Members will get reduced rates for training sessions and matches. For example, attendance at Youth Training and Nets sessions will cost only £3 compared to £6 for non-members for a two hour session.
Contact the MDCC Youth Convenor, Ian Shiels, on 07730 074174 or at ian_shiels@hotmail.com or see below for a Youth Membership form.
At our last AGM, we set a Youth Membership subscription rate of just £15 for 2010 (our full adult membership rate for 2010 is £80).
The Junior Membership form can be downloaded here at this link to 2010 Junior Membership Form.
Our MDCC Youth membership has the following benefits:
• reduced rates for cost of attendance at MDCC Youth indoor coaching sessions
(£3 rather than £6 non-member)
• reduced rates of match fees for games,
• priority in selection for youth matches over non-members,
• members are covered by the Club Insurance Policy while playing and practising.
2009 subscriptions can be paid at the practice sessions or, if you wish, send a cheque, payable to Murrayfield-DAFS Cricket Club, to Ian Shiels, MDCC Youth Convenor, 2/6 Tytler Gardens, Edinburgh, EH8 8HQ.
As a full member of the Club, it also means a youth member has the same rights for selection for any of our adult fixtures, where this is appropriate. Note our policy for senior League games is to pick the strongest balanced team available - we believe that if you are good enough and mature enough then age (young or old!) should not matter. Selection for midweek and sunday friendlies is based simply on availability and we try to ensure all members get a fair crack at these fixtures if they make themselves available.
Back to Top of PageFor indoor sessions, children should wear comfortable training gear - would be best if footwear had non-marking soles.
For summer outdoor practice at Roseburn Park, children should be appropriately dressed for outdoor physical activity. It would be best also if they brought along their own drinks.
Murrayfield-DAFS coaches will supply playing equipment for use in training sessions, but children are welcome to bring their own.
If anyone needs any advice on buying cricket equipment then do get in touch. Our Club Website Links page lists a number of on-line retailers.
We have a basic stock of youth equipment (bats, pads, r-h gloves, helmets)
courtesy of receiving a U-11 Youth Cricket bag from The Lord's Taverners cricket
charity and some of our own stock. However we would ask you to purchase items
such as youth/boys sized thigh pads, and the very necessary (for hard-ball cricket)
'abdominal protector' and 'athletic support'. Or in old language, a cricket
box and jock-strap! The kit bag will have a stock of these items but it would
better for the boys to be kitted out with their own for obvious reasons!
For help on sizing, there’s a good kit size guide on-line at the Owzat Cricket website size guide .

MDAFS Juniors first League game played versus Grange
Our youngsters played their first ever U-13 League B Division game on Monday 25 May versus Grange 'B' at Roseburn Park. Murrayfield DAFS batted first and scored 46 for 8 from their 20 overs. Max Hancock took 2 for two, and Jack Mullins 2 for six for Grange. Grange replied with 73 for 5 from their 20 overs. Max Hancock scored 12. For MDAFS, Daniel Barker took 2 for two and skipper Ben Falconer took an excellent tumbling catch at square-leg/mid-wicket. Every player on both teams contributed in some way to the game, and despite the cold and drizzle in the closing stages everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
MDAFS Juniors League Adventure Continues
The Juniors took on Carlton 2 and Edinburgh Academicals - although both games lost the lads have gained valuable match experience and continue to develop well. Result details can be found at the Cow Corner Lothian Junior Cricket Development League webpages.
Outdoor Youth Nets Sessions
Thursday practices are now underway from 5pm to 6.45-ish again at Roseburn Park. Sessions are weather dependent - we will text around parents mobile contact numbers if cancelled. We also run ad hoc outdoor weekend hardball net sessions at Roseburn Park - contact Ian on 07730 074174 for details of day and time.
MDCC enters LJDG U-13 League
We have entered a Juniors team to play full 11-a-side hardball 20/20 matches in the Lothian Junior Cricket Development Group Youth Cricket League - U13 - Division B. Please find link to the full U-13 League fixture list. Games are played on Mondays at 6pm. Cow Corner (www.cowcc.com) are sponsoring the Leagues and have produced an excellent website for the Lothian Junior Cricket Development League.
Sunday 1 February 2009 - MDCC v Edinburgh CC - LJDG U-11 Indoor 8s
A small but significant landmark for the club was reached today (Sunday 1 Feb), as MDAFS fielded it's first Youth team in competitive action. We played Edinburgh CC Youth in our first fixture in the Lothian Junior Development Group U-11 8-a-side Indoor Tournament at West Woods. The format is 12 overs a side - with 4 pairs of batters having 3 overs each - runs scored off walls etc. Both teams start with a score of 200 - with a 5 run deduction per wicket. MDAFS scored a net 282 runs (losing 7 wickets) off their 12 overs and Edinburgh 304 (losing 4 wkts)- so a 22 run win for ECC. For MDAFS there were partnerships of 33 (no wkts) between Finlay Ross and Joe Loughrey and another 33 partnership between Ben Falconer and Antony Ozkan ( 2 wkts lost).
Next up in 2 weeks time (Sun 22 Feb) is Grange.
Sunday 22 February 2009 - MDCC v Grange CC - LJDG U-11 Indoor 8s
Grange 281 - (3 wkts)Our next game was predictably tough for MDAFS Juniors as Grange ran out comfortable winners, due in the main to their excellent and accurate bowling.
In Grange's innings - two main stands of 23-0 by Jack and Lorne and then 32-1 by Aseem and Oscar saw Grange up to 281 for loss of 3 wickets. Wicket takers for MDAFS were Faisel Javed, Ben Falconer and Joe Loughrey. Good bowling from Grange caused problems straightaway for the MDAFS batsmen and wickets fell steadily as MDAFS tried to play aggressive strokes. Only the pairing of Joe Loughrey and Brennain Fraser managed to keep the Grange bowlers at bay, losing just the one wicket in their partnership of 11. For Grange, top bowler was Oscar with 5 wickets for 7 runs, Sandy, Max, and Lorne each took 3 wickets and Azeem 1 wicket.
Sunday 8 March 2009 - MDCC v Carlton CC - LJDG U-11 Indoor 8s

Penicuik 260 - (3 wkts)MDAFS continued to show improvement with a close finish in this game with MDAFS needing 11 off the final over to win. But a couple of run outs and good bowling by Penicuik's Scott Charleston saw Penicuik to victory.
Penicuik pairs batting:-Wicket takers for Penicuik:
Euan 2 for 7
Jack 1 for 11
Henry 1 for 12
Scott 3 for 16
Sunday 22 March 2009 - MDCC v Watsonians CC - LJDG U-11 Indoor 8s
After coming close to victory in last weeks' game, MDAFS Juniors notched up their maiden victory with an win over Watsonians by 18 runs in the final round of matches. We are an ambitious club who we feel is on an upward path of development, indeed has attained Active Status in Cricket Scotland's Top Club scheme. Establishing and developing our own dedicated youth session and having junior teams playing competitive cricket games against other cricket club youth sections is all part of our vision and our development plans. We feel passionate about playing cricket and want to share that passion about this glorious game with the next generation of youngsters. We hope you can help us achieve that.
2008 Youth Pilot Outcomes
Last summer (2008) we started up pilot Youth project that involved Club Coaches putting on regular youth training sessions at Roseburn Park on Thursdays 5.00-6.30pm from 5 June to the end of August. 12 sessions were scheduled only 2 fell to the wet weather! From an initial start of around 5-6 children we had doubled the numbers by the end of the season and were to enter some Kwick Cricket festivals... but the wet weather intervened! As the majority of children were beginners, we introduced them to cricket using softball/Kwik-Cricket. It was good fun and a deemed a very successful start, so we are building on that start next year as described above.
